Why Should Christians have regular devotionals?
The short answer—is to deepen your spiritual growth. More specifically:
Devotionals allow you to cultivate a relationship with God
Any meaningful relationship in your life includes spending quality time with a significant person. You schedule specific times to meet to get to know that person’s character, what they like and dislike, how they view the world and others. If it is a new romantic interest, you love to know every little detail about them—their backstory, childhood, family history, hobbies, skills, and life goals. You learn to develop a rhythm for doing life together in enjoyable and meaningful ways. You work out the conflicts that are an inevitable part of building relationships.
In the same way, when you become a Christ-follower, you enter a relationship with a triune God. Devotionals offer regular opportunities to spend time with God, one on one, getting to know His character, his values, and views. He already knows every detail about you because he created you and knew you before you entered this world. If you need a reminder about how well God knows you, read Psalm 139.
Devotionals enable you to grow spiritually
Jesus explains spiritual growth beautifully in the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23).
If you want to grow spiritually, you want to cultivate a heart that is receptive to God’s teaching through scriptures. It means allowing the word of God to take root in your thoughts and beliefs. When you do, it will become visible expressions in your behaviours and ways of relating to those around you. This means aligning your daily life with God’s principles and purposes. Journaling is a great way to work out the areas in your life that need refining. It is a private space shared only with God where you can honestly unravel and work out the issues specific to your growth.
